Reviewing my arts challenge

My arts challenging of becoming more knowledgeable in Premiere Pro and learning how to professionally edit through experimentation between layering and effect controls – overall visual effects has been successful yet challenging with aspects such as the timeframe given for editing. Though I did not get to complete the further challenge I had set which was experimentation with After Effects, I have set it for an overall editing goal when I practice filmmaking myself. My action plan challenged me due to the time of 3 days to edit, and I could have been more clear in the beginning as to how to edit on the 3 days,  e.g label the fact that I could have cut a rough cut on the first day, sound and effects on the second and finalising the whole film on the third. Help I needed came from our editing mentors.

The parts which went well included filming and taking editing notes on set which helped me in post production and learning about editing tricks / techniques from both the director and our editing mentors. Completing the film was more challenging as we had continounty issues, therefore trying to resolve these seemed difficult.

I have learnt how to handle difficult situations better through my arts challenge and I now feel more confident in Premiere Pro. Editing with layers and colour correcting scenes to make them look more dramatic or cinematic is a useful thing I have learnt and will take with me for future projects. Next time, I would plan out a time schedule and editing wise, not spend too long trying to perfect a single scene or issue. Getting as much footage to develop the storyline and make sure it made sense to the audience is important, etc.

Arts skills I would like to develop next include using more editing softwares along with setting goals in the camera department and working to achieve these. The filming experience was insightful and I would like to have the opportunity to experiment with being slick with cameras and knowing what to do & when.

Feedback of my arts challenge has been written:

Day 12 – Editing day 3

The last day of editing is when my art challenge goal had been fulfilled to a successful extent, as I had learnt how to do a specific visual effects from the director along with expanding further on the feedback from the previous week on colour correction. Due to timing, my arts challenge of finding a signature colour correcting look were not fulfilled however after professionally editing more as time progresses is an art skill I will develop.

My goals of experimenting with visual effects and playing around with opacity controls is shown through the glitched colour effect on the mysterious hunter character, which adds dramaticness along with other editing aspects like sound towards the end of the film making it more humorous and obvious for the audience that the game is fake and in virtual reality.  Adding dramatic sound effects is an aspect of editing I had not considered before, whilst also colour correcting the shot. Adding these effects into the film made me realise the overall impact some effects have on film and has again expanded my knowledge, fulfilling my arts challenge. Being certain that the idea of the game being fake is clear to the audience is a piece of information in which I remembered from a professional, Alex, in pre production of choosing our scripts – be sure that the audience have clarity as to what’s happening, otherwise they know nothing and may be confused otherwise. The final cut had therefore been finished at the start of the day with colour corrected effects added towards the end and finalised sound.

Though we could not use all footage, the storyline makes sense and has some humour, as seen when shown to a few group members. To improve for any future editing, I would consider time more and be sure to finish a rough cut sooner. Unfortunately, my action plan had been changed due to the timeframe we had I did not get to use After Effects  however outside the academy this will be a goal to achieve in order to gain more overall experience in editing softwares.  My goal of gaining creative knowledge in Premiere Pro and editing professionally has however been successful as I have learnt new visual effects and the way in which these can impact the film, along with colour corrections through using keyframes and making these parallel to the sound, as learnt from the director, and more professional tips from the editor mentor, Ben, such as making sure the final sound hits a level of around -12 for a reasonably perfect level and the bar level does not reach a red colour.

Day 11 – Editing day 2

The goal for the second day of editing was to gather all the footage onto the timeline, along with creating an atmosphere of building up dramaticness of this being a real paintball game, then to make audience laugh when they realise it’s all virtual reality. This had only been done upto the middle of the film as there were issues with continuity where time was being spent fixing before receiving feedback.

There were challenging times of the second editing day, including continuity issues such as the incorrect way in which the characters were looking compared to where the action was supposedly occuring, along with cuts between one of the brothers removing their virtual reality headpiece visually looking fake. My goal of professionally transitioning had been challenged at this moment, however adding dramatic sound effects and working with the director had fixed this though taking away some time. One thing I would do differently another time is, if on set, be more observant as to how the two locations would fit together in post and ask the director or cinematographer questions if I think there may issues with continuity etc.

These aspects of the edit were challenging, however learning things such as how to flip a scene from the editing mentor was helpful, and has been an aspect that contributes to my arts challenge as I have used the effect in outside editing footage for continuity, therefore expanding my knowledge in Premiere Pro. I had also learnt a shortcut for adjusting left and right audio levels when on a timeline rather than in effect controls – shift G, which saves some time whilst editing.

We had shown the rough cuts to our group and received feedback. This included ideas on colour correction, such as changing the colour when switching between the VR room and forest, along with suggestions on where sound would be added to build up more tension. The focus was therefore to make sure the tension was being built up successfully, then losing some footage where fixing continuity issues took away too much time.

Considering the feedback, colour correction and experimentation with opacity was added with footage of the mysterious hunter character. Experimenting with the way in which he was going to be portrayed is an aspect of the day that went well and fulfilled my action plan of adjusting in effect controls.

Day 10 – Editing day 1

On the first editing day, my goal to develop in Premiere Pro had begun. Initially, I went over a few shots from footage divided into folders of the days and followed the notes I had made to find the first few scenes to roughly cut in sequence. The establishing shots filmed in the forest location were at the beginning, along with a few shots of the scary, mysterious character being the hunter. This was to introduce the character in a dramatic way. The sequence shortly after included the two brother characters being introduced. The goal set my our editing mentor was to add all dialogue for the brothers from the script by the end of the day.

What went well on this day included the introduction to the characters and sound, adding music made the setup sound professional as desired, and gave a foundation for continuing background and foley sound later on in the film, contributing to the sound edit goal within my arts challenge.

However, reflecting back, the first editing day could have been better as time was wasted figuring out whether the two brothers should be introduced straight away or the other female character, Patricia should be introduced first. The director and myself had then spent a lot of time perfecting the start of the film by cutting the videos to the sound on beat, rather than gathering all the footage taken.

My action plan for the first editing day could have included getting all the footage onto the timeline first before professionally editing it, however this is something I have learnt about rough cuts and will consider for future film editing.

I had applied my previous editing skills on this day and have kept my final goal to improve in the software the same for the next few weeks. The continuity within the footage may be challenging, however there are good cinematic shots to work with as part of the advantages so far. Through progressing further into my editing arts challenge, I have learnt the importance of continuity and how precious time is.

Day 9 – Filming day 2

The second day of filming included going off to our second location, to match our script location of using a forest and VR room. My target of taking notes on location was fulfilled and I had been matching the shots from the first filming location, the forest, to this one. Our group was pleased with the results and It is my job to fit both the locations together to create the virtual world desired in post production.

Day 8 – Filming day 1

For our first day of filming, we went out on location to a park with a forest setting. On this day I had taken many editing notes – in order to help me in post production. This included the slate and scene put on the clapperboard etc. IMG_1328[1]

Skills I had learnt on the day and observed included the professionalism and when to use ” camera rolling, sound speed and camera speed ” I found the whole filming aspect insightful and felt as though we were successful in getting cinematic shots however we faced some challenges with sound / recording dialogue as we filmed in a public environment on a saturday, along with being limited with time.

To overcome this challenge, we decided to film long and wide shots in the morning where the public population within our location was less than what it may have been later on in the day. Any shots we did not film due to timing had been decided to film in our other location of the virtual reality room.

Being on set and experiencing these challenges has however only taught and prepared me for future film set environments, especially with the time management and scheduling aspect, as we were in a situation were time was limited.

Day 7

IMG_9855.JPG

On day 7 of the academy, our group went over and finalised everything for the filming on the upcoming week. This therefore made sure that our group were organised and kept equipt, along with knowing and being professional on the day. The group saw and recapped how to set up the Canon C100, and went over a few shots with any story lines to apply the understanding of the camera.  Sound was also set up and made sure that things such as loose wires don’t affect the audio along with getting the setup so that the audio could be as clear as possible. As the editor, my work lies in post production, therefore meaning I will help in all areas, therefore was important I view also the setup and use of everything.

IMG_9845.JPGOur group meeting with our mentor, Bradley, meant we went over the shot list, along with the producer and director meeting the actors and casting. After this was a group decision on the characters to use to play the brothers within our script and on the locations we would be using and backups just in case. Our mentor also told us tips for filming and aspects to ensure we get the best possible footage.

Day 6

Editing workshop-

( absent day 4&5) Day 6 of the academy included broadening my understanding of premiere pro in a masterclass with a professional and initially learning how to use after effects. This helped as I am the editor of the group and gave me more ideas as to how to edit my short film. Learning how to use a software I had never used before was challenging however was interesting and I hope to use it when editing.

We were editing the short clips filmed previously which included the 180 degree rule, This had to be done in the time frame of around 1 hr, and we used the music given.

Link to edit – youtube.com/watch

( 30/11/18) Looking over the edit after practising with Premiere Pro has allowed me to reflect and realise other techniques I could have added, for example a fade in and out of the video along with muting background noise ( in Premiere Pro or Adobe Audition ) I also could have added some colour correction to overall make the video look more cinematic and experiment with editing. Therefore I have practised and viewed my arts challenge which has allowed me to reflect on this video.

Crucial aspects which I found useful included shortcuts learnt such as how to get rid of a gap when editing between a video. This helped as the time for editing the final video is limited. I also learnt how to use key frames and adjust these at certain times of the video to ensure the desired effect is at the right duration and time.

Arts research

Art forms in which interest me include film, photography and some visual arts. As part of learning and exploring more within these art forms, I have researched professionals behind each art form. The professionals behind film have been recorded on day 4, following photography and visual arts –

Photography is the main art form I am interested in and relates to a career in itself along with Fashion designers, graphic designers, camera operators, architects, reporters, etc. Their location of work may vary, for example camera operators who may travel for their footage along with reporters travelling for their news, also all depending on their genre of photography in which they specialise in.

A photographer who I take inspiration from and have based some photographs around in the past is Brandon Woelfel. Brandon is a freelance portrait photographer based in New York who started out on Instagram over 5 years ago. His work includes portrait photographs of models and / or friends with various intruding elements added in. His main model subject always includes an extra object such as a prism or fairy lights or lighting element, separating him from other portrait photographers. Places where his work is displayed / used for are shoots with brands such as Urban Outfitters and Aeropostale. What I like most about his work is the use of shallow depth of field and interrupting subjects, along with the stories told behind his placement of models. Viewing his actual work and comments he makes behind the scenes / things to tell the audience is an aspect which has helped me so far in terms of being more experimental and creative in photography and will continue to, purely through having a figure as an inspiration. The drive to create something different and tell stories through photographs is something I aspire to do.

The visual arts aspect includes viewing Balenciaga’s exhibition at V&A and a moving image exhibition. The art forms under this include Though this art form is less of a interest compared to others, the experience was compelling and artistically interesting. The research also intertwines well with some arts events I have experienced.                                                                                                                                                                    Balenciagas exhibition sparked interests I hold in fashion and was interesting to view as part of having more knowledge about collections and the experience of viewing processes and extravagant materials used under influences of historical events and cultural places. Types of people that are involved in the art form include fashion designers, artists from painters / drawers, fashion journalists, costume designers as part of production design, Editorial assistant, etc. Places in which these people would show their work include exhibitions it themselves, in the media through editorial magazines, online / recorded collections and museums or galleries. Similar to the photography research, the work in itself benefits and helps me as I can view it as inspiration. Ways in which I could get involved include contacting smaller artists who have portfolios of work and researching meanings behind their work by asking or interviewing them. I could also ask people studying textiles within my college as a practitioner to gain more knowledge about how the overall fashion and art industry works and expand the information I have on the art form.

Day 4 – meeting professionals

As part of my arts research, I have listened to the professionals from the film industry who have answered our questions from day 3 and have given insight into their individual roles. Listening to the professionals has been insightful as it has provided me with information from people who have been in the industry for long amounts of time and have provided good tips and answer to questions from their personal experiences. These answers have helped me as I can continue developing my skills in the media platform whilst taking into consideration what has been said to overall continuously  learn and achieve the best possible in both normal and challenging times.

As my arts challenge was in editing, I found that hearing the editors experience interesting as university is something I would like to hear more about, along with her advice about going and completing any types of work to gain experience until you’re sure on what you want and when this is the case, be determined to get it. One thing I found helpful for my future editing was Jennifer Sherridan’s advice on telling stories and making sure at the end of the day the story has clarity, along with her view on stories between film and TV – stories on TV may be shorter but also more fun, however stories in film have a longer time to develop.                                                                                                     My main interest is in cinematography, therefore I enjoyed hearing Tania Hoser’s previous experience of becoming a cinematographer and the challenges she faced when trying to find a placement and the continuous amounts of applying to various places in order to show her skills. Her advice included things such as telling us about freelancing in the industry –  as you would not have any guidance, her advice was to assess what’s happening in the industry at the moment and assess your personal work as to where the work fits in. This benefits me for the future and gives more knowledge, along with her advice about having a temporary mentor whether this be a friend or a family member to help organise yourself and prepare for the future with a possible professional mentor. As the job is technical and involves teamwork, Tania’s advice was to understand the equipment your using in order to be slick and fast and help the rest of the team and help technically tell the story, along with visually telling the story.

Career paths and next steps –                                                                                                           As I would like to continue beginning a journey into the media industry, I have considered next path steps which involve being on set and hands on as a runner or an apprenticeship after my education at college finishes. I have some opportunities that I would like to continue into the future such as the Get Into Media programme with the BBC, which is a 2 year course in I am currently undertaking and in which an apprenticeship may be offered at the end of. Further schemes I am involved in include being signed up with BCE (big creative education) who provide opportunities for future media apprenticeships or runner opportunities. I have spoken to some members of the MAMA Youth project and have considered the organisation. Further BFI courses in which intrigue me include the BFI Film Academy Craft Residential delivered by NFTS. The course itself sounds compelling, though challenging. I would like to take part in an experience that provides even more knowledge by being on set with like minded and aged personas, as the current academy has taught me much about the media industry and film sets, etc.  The route in which I would like to follow is the technical camera role in order to eventually become a cinematographer, initially possibly beginning as a focus puller, clapper loader, leading to assistant camera etc. The courses mentioned may help me with getting to the goal I would like to achieve as they would provide experience for me and expand skills I have, allowing myself to require jobs that are more involved in the industry.

Further path options I could have include university, I am interested in studying a course at UAL (university of arts London) under their film or media section, and am currently doing a small programme, ‘ stories on screen ‘ as part of getting into film and exploring the university located in Elephant and castle. The university is my first desired choice as I am currently studying a qualification under UAL – UALAB Level 3 in Media Production and Technology.  Studying the qualification therefore gives me insight as to who they are what they’re standards are, etc.

Further following the university route, I have an interest in university of Westminster. This is due to the facilities they have and word of mouth about the art formed departments.
